The Western Laboratory is located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains close to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The original laboratory building was completed in 1995 and is shared with the Western District Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. On February 24, 2014, the laboratory began an expansion and renovation project, which was completed in the fall of 2016.

On Monday, September 26, 2016, the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Western Laboratory Expansion/Renovation was held in Roanoke. The ceremony celebrated the official opening of the renovated and expanded DFS Western Laboratory and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Western District. Speakers for the ceremony included Director Linda Jackson, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. William Gormley, Secretary of Administration Nancy Rodrigues, Secretary of Health and Human Resources William Hazel, and Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran. Numerous representatives from local law enforcement agencies and Commonwealth’s Attorneys offices attended, as well as representatives from DFS, the OCME, SFCS Architects and W.M. Jordan. A reception followed the ceremony, and tours of both DFS and OCME portions of the building were provided to guests.
